Newcombe Fellowships

Newcombe Fellowships are awarded annually following a rigorous national selection process. Eligibility for Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships is limited to students enrolled in doctoral programs in the humanities and social sciences at graduate schools in the United States. Awards are for 12 months of dissertation writing. All doctoral requirements except the dissertation must be completed by December of the year preceding the Fellowship award. No Newcombe Foundation support is available for post-doctoral fellowships. To be eligible for selection, the graduate scholar must be preparing a dissertation in which ethical or religious values are a central concern. According to the Woodrow Wilson National Scholarship Foundation, "...dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decision, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature."

Newcombe Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

Newcombe Scholarships for Mature Women Students

The Foundation's grants in these two programs are limited to universities and four-year colleges in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, New York City and Washington, DC. In selecting academic institutions to participate, the Foundation's trustees consider those that render exceptional services to large numbers of students with disabilities or to mature women students. Colleges and universities that apply for a Newcombe Scholarship grant for one of these groups of students must agree to assume responsibility for grant administration, including adhering to the Foundation's scholarship selection guidelines, monitoring grant funds and reporting fully on program administration.

Applicants must also be willing to accept challenges to build Newcombe Endowed Scholarship Funds with matching contributions from other donors.

Newcombe Scholarships at Presbyterian Colleges

Colleges related to the Presbyterian Church (USA) that enroll a significant proportion of economically disadvantaged students may send a letter of inquiry to the Foundation's office or call to discuss eligibility. Application materials will be sent to colleges that fit the program's guidelines.

Awards are exclusively in the form of ambitious challenges to build Newcombe-endowed scholarship funds.

Other Limitations

• Awards are made only to colleges and universities. Please contact the Foundation to discuss eligibility requirements, and to request application forms and guidelines. The inquiry deadline is September 30, and the application deadline is November 1st.
• Applications must be sent by mail. No faxed or e-mailed applications will be accepted.
• The Foundation concentrates its scholarships on students seeking baccalaureate degrees. No grants are made to two-year colleges or professional schools in the programs described above.
• Colleges and universities that apply for a Newcombe Scholarship grant must agree to assume responsibility for grant administration, including adhering to the Foundation's scholarship selection guidelines, monitoring grant funds and reporting fully on program administration.
• The programs of scholarships for students with disabilities and for mature women students are limited geographically so that the Foundation can maintain close communication with recipient institutions. Colleges in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Washington, DC and New York City may apply for these scholarship grants. Applicants for these grants must also be willing to accept challenges to build Newcombe Endowed Scholarship Funds with matching contributions from other donors.
• The program of scholarships for disadvantaged students is limited to applications from colleges which are related to the Presbyterian Church (USA). Applicant colleges must enroll a significant number of economically disadvantaged students. Awards are exclusively in the form of ambitious challenges to build Newcombe-endowed scholarship funds.
• Funding is for one of these groups only: institutions may not receive grants for multiple programs.
• Funds are not provided for academic or administrative program development, staffing or support.
• The Newcombe Foundation does not participate in the selection of individual scholarship recipients, which is handled by the colleges and universities that receive Newcombe grants. Individuals may not apply to the foundation for scholarships.
