Each spring, the Newcombe Foundation determines its fellowship, scholarship and endowment and awards for the coming academic year. Final data on the distribution of awards is compiled from reports submitted by participating colleges and universities at the end of each academic year. Thus, awards determined in the spring of 2007 will benefit students during the 2007-08 academic year, and final data on these awards will not be available until late in 2008.
Final data are currently available for the Foundation's first 26 years of grantmaking, from 1981 through 2006. During those years, the Foundation awarded $43.4 million in grants to provide scholarships and fellowships in higher education:
- The program of Newcombe Fellowships, run by the Woodrow Wilson national Fellowship Foundation, received $15.6 million. 979 nationally-selected young scholars were supported as Newcombe Fellows.
- Newcombe Scholarships were established at 87 colleges and universities with $26.7 million from the Foundation. 31,200 Scholarship awards assisted returning women students and students with disabilities at these institutions, as well as disadvantaged students at selected Presbyterian Colleges.
- Over $1 million was granted for special endowments and awards. 53 Nbewcombe Endowed Scholarship Funds were established and augmented by challenge grants from the Foundation and matched by other donors. Income from these endowed funds increased the annual distribution of Newcombe Scholarship awards. By the end of the 2006-07 academic year, these funds, then valued at more than $10.3 million, had provided more than $3.3 million for Newcombe Scholarships.
In 2006, The Newcombe Foundation awarded grants totaling $2.2 million to support its fellowship and scholarship programs in the 2006-07 academic year, up 19% over the previous year’s combined grants. Almost one quarter of this funding was directed to matching challenges to build many of the Newcombe Endowed Scholarship Funds, which, at last report, had a combined market value of more than $10.3 million. The 2006 grants brought the Newcombe Foundation’s cumulative total funding to more than $43.4 million.
