Newcombe Foundation Recognized as
"2009 Outstanding Foundation of the Year"

January, 2010

At the 24th annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon in Philadelphia last November 19, the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) honored the Princeton-based Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation as the "Outstanding Foundation of the Year."

The Newcombe Foundation was created in 1979 under the will of Mrs. Newcombe, a Philadelphia philanthropist who greatly valued higher education. Since 1981, the Foundation has awarded grants in excess of $50 million to selected higher education institutions for scholarships and fellowships. The Foundation's largest scholarship programs support mature women students and students with disabilities. Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships, awarded annually through a rigorous national competition, encourage original and significant study of ethical and religious values in all areas of human endeavor.

For the 2009-10 academic year, just under $2 million in grants were awarded to thirty-seven colleges and universities and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. During 2008-09, 942 students received Newcombe Scholarships averaging $1,876 and twenty-nine graduate students received $23,000 Newcombe Fellowships.

In conferring the award, the AFP Chapter commended the Newcombe Foundation for "striving to forge a deep and lasting relationship with its grantees" and for "encouraging grantees to share ideas with each other regarding what works at each individual institution." In accepting the award, executive director Thomas N. Wilfrid said, "All of us associated with the Newcombe Foundation are grateful for the opportunity to contribute, through money and encouragement, to the success of hundreds of worthy students each year at scores of colleges and universities."
