The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation continues Mrs. Newcombe's interest in providing scholarships for students who need financial assistance as they seek to complete degrees in higher education. Since 1981, the Foundation has provided Newcombe Scholarships for students at selected colleges and universities that are related to the Presbyterian Church (USA). These scholarships reflect Mrs. Newcombe's deep commitment to the Presbyterian Church.
Grants are not made directly to individual students. Each institution, through committees of counselors, faculty and financial aid officers, selects scholarship recipients and administers the scholarship program according to Foundation guidelines.
The colleges chosen to receive Newcombe Scholarship grants in this program serve economically disadvantaged populations and in most cases have small endowments and limited scholarship funds. Nineteen Presbyterian-related colleges and universities have participated in this program over the past twenty-eight years; thirteen of these institutions maintain Newcombe-endowed scholarship funds for eligible students. In 2008-09, well over $200,000 was awarded as Newcombe Scholarships to students at these institutions.
The thirteen Newcombe-endowed scholarship funds at Presbyterian institutions were valued at $4.6 million as of June 2009. They have provided more than $2 million in Newcombe Scholarship awards. Through the end of the 2008-09 academic year, this program received $8.2 million in Newcombe Foundation grants.
No new grants were awarded in this program for 2009-10. However, thirteen previously funded institutions continue to provide Newcombe Scholarships from Newcombe-endowed scholarship funds:
